International Women’s Day 2022

International Women’s Day is a day celebrated around the world. Recognising, social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women globally.

A bit of history

International Women’s Day has been observed since the early 1900’s. In 1908 oppression and inequality was spurring women to become more vocal and active in campaigning for change. Marching their way through the streets of New York, over 15,000 women rose and demanded shorter working hours and the right to vote. Since this day many women throughout history have fought for their own rights and voice within the world. This has led to amazing achievements throughout women’s history. Such as, the right to vote, this was finally agreed within the 1920’s, the right to serve alongside men in the military in 1948 and the right to equal pay in the 1960’s. But not all achievements of women’s rights have been based around political views. In 1973 Billie Jean King defeats Bobbie Rings in the “Battle of the sexes”. During the 70’s women’s sports was still treated as less than. Billie Jean King had other views and wanted to prove them. Bobby King slammed the quality of women’s tennis and demanded it to face its top players. On that day 30,000 people watched King defeat Giggs in an amazing event which still gets told to this day.

The 2022 Campaign

#Breakthebias

The campaign theme for International Women’s Day 2022 is #Breakthebias. Although a lot has changed since the early 1900’s there is a lot of stereotypes surrounding women in 2022. #Breakthebias is there to remind us of all a gender equal world. “A world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination. A world that is diverse, equitable and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women’s equality. Collectively we can break the Bia’s”

Inspired quotes

G.D Anderson – “Feminism isn’t about making the women strong. Its about changing the way the world perceives that strength”

Atticus – “She wasn’t looking for a knight, she was looking for a sword”

Audrey Hepburn- “I believe in strong when everything seems to be going wrong – I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day and I believe in miracles”

Amy Tenney – “The world needs strong women who will lift and build others. Who will love and be loved. Women who live bravely, both tender and fierce; women of indomitable will.”
